Frequently asked question!

Hi, How can I help you? Search for your answer in these categories

Ashes & Hair

1. Do I have to send my loved one's ashes in the post? I'm scared something might happen to them.

Absolutely not. You never need to send ashes in the post if you don't feel comfortable. Most people feel anxious at the thought of posting ashes and we understand why. Ashes carry emotional weight. Trusting them to the postal system can feel overwhelming.

That's why we offer a unique alternative: you can bring a small amount of ashes or hair to our Nuneaton showroom, and we will fill and seal your jewellery on-site.

This gives you full control, no postal risk, no anxiety, and peace of mind knowing everything is safe.

If you do choose postal kits, they are fully tracked and secure but the choice is always yours.

2. How much ashes or hair do you need? I'm worried about parting with too much.

We only need a tiny amount:

  • Ashes: around half a teaspoon
  • Hair: a small lock, about the width of a pencil

Any unused ashes or hair are carefully sealed, clearly labelled, and returned to you safely with your jewellery.

We never discard anything. We treat every inclusion as if it were from our own family.

3. What happens to the ashes after you receive them? I'm anxious they could get mixed up or misplaced.

This is the fear people rarely say aloud, but almost everyone feels it.

Here is our reassurance: we use a meticulous chain-of-custody process. From the moment ashes or hair arrive, we label everything immediately, store them in a secure dedicated area, log each step in our tracking system, handle each set individually, never leave materials unattended, never mix or combine ashes, and never discard anything.

Your loved one's ashes remain safe, separate, and clearly identifiable at every moment. We take this responsibility with absolute seriousness.

Choosing Your Jewellery

1. What if I'm not sure what type of jewellery to choose? I don't want to get it wrong.

You can't "get it wrong". There is no correct choice — just the choice that feels right for you.

Our showroom is designed so you can see every piece, feel the weight, compare metals, hold designs side by side, ask questions, and take as long as you need. You will never be rushed or pressured.

If you are ordering online, our team can guide you by phone or email with the same gentle approach. Many customers tell us they "knew" when they held the right piece — and we're here to help you reach that moment.

2. Can I see the jewellery before I decide?

Yes - and this is one of the reasons families choose us.

Our Memorial & Jewellery Showroom in Nuneaton is a calm, private space designed specifically for this purpose. You can see every design, try on pieces, compare sizes, speak with someone who understands bereavement, and take your time.

For many, this takes away most of the pressure and anxiety.

3. What if I change my mind after placing the order?

If you change your mind before we begin crafting, we can update the design easily.

If work has already started, there may be an adjustment fee — but we will always explain this clearly and compassionately. You will never be left confused, pressured, or out of options.

Orders & Timescales

1. How long will the process take? I don't want to be waiting months.

Most pieces take 4–6 weeks from the moment we receive your materials and confirm your order.

If you have a meaningful date in mind — birthday, anniversary, Christmas — tell us, and we will always try our best to meet it.

2. I'm worried about cost. Do you have flexible options?

We understand that finances can be difficult, especially during grief.

We try to offer clear, honest pricing, no hidden fees, a range of options across budgets, and guidance to help you choose the right piece without overspending.

We want you to choose what feels meaningful, not what feels financially burdensome.

Care & Aftercare

1. Is the jewellery waterproof? Can I wear it all the time?

We recommend removing the jewellery for showering, swimming, sports, and sleeping. This protects the metal and ensures your piece lasts a lifetime.

We include simple care instructions with every order.

2. What if the jewellery becomes damaged or needs adjusting later?

We offer a 12-month guarantee on workmanship and fittings, with repairs, adjustments and maintenance available beyond that for a small fee.

If anything feels loose, damaged, or not quite right, contact us immediately. We'd much rather assess and fix it early than have you worry.

Emotions & Comfort

1. Will it actually feel comforting? I'm scared it might feel strange or upsetting.

This is one of the most honest worries people have — and it's valid.

Here's the truth: for some, the comfort is immediate. For others, it takes a few days. Both are normal.

What we hear most often is: "It feels like I have them with me again."

You are not expected to feel anything a certain way. There is no "right" emotional response. We are here to support you whichever way it feels.

Why Devall & Son

1. What makes Devall & Son different from online-only memorial jewellers?

Several things:

A real, physical showroom where you can see and try pieces — this alone removes uncertainty.

On-site filling of ashes — no postal risk, no anxiety.

A family with generations of bereavement experience — we understand the emotional landscape better than most.

Handcrafted UK jewellery — no mass production, no overseas batches.

A calm, private experience built around dignity, respect and understanding.

Families consistently tell us: "I felt safe with you." That is what we want for every person who walks through our door.
