Do I Need to Send Ashes to Devall & Son?

For most of our memorial jewellery, you don't need to send your ashes to us at all. Our compartment-style pieces, including rings, pendants, bracelets, and charms, come with a filling kit so you can add the ashes yourself at home, in your own time and privacy.

This means the ashes never leave your possession. You receive the jewellery, add the ashes when you're ready, seal the compartment, and it's done.

What If My Piece Does Require Ashes to Be Sent?

For certain designs where the ashes are set into resin or incorporated during crafting, we may need to receive a small sample. In these cases:

  • We send you a secure collection kit with a small, sealable container and clear instructions
  • Use Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed or a tracked courier service; this provides full tracking, a signature on delivery, and insurance cover
  • Only a tiny amount is needed, typically less than a quarter of a teaspoon
  • We store your ashes securely while your piece is being made, and any unused ashes are returned to you with your finished jewellery

Is It Legal to Post Ashes in the UK?

Yes. There are no legal restrictions on sending cremation ashes through the post within the United Kingdom. Royal Mail and all major courier services accept cremation ashes for delivery. It's something that happens safely thousands of times every year across the country.

Tips for Sending Ashes Safely

If you do need to post ashes to us or to anyone else, here are some practical tips:

  1. Use a sealed, leak-proof container, such as a small screw-top pot or zip-lock bag inside a padded envelope
  2. Double-bag everything: place the sealed container inside a second sealed bag for extra security
  3. Always use tracked, signed-for delivery; Royal Mail Special Delivery or a tracked courier gives you peace of mind
  4. Label the package clearly: mark it as "Cremation Ashes. Handle With Care" on the inside
  5. Keep a receipt and tracking number, so you can follow the delivery every step of the way

What About Travelling Abroad With Ashes Jewellery?

Wearing memorial jewellery through airport security is generally fine; the tiny amount of ashes inside won't trigger any issues. However, if you're carrying a larger quantity of ashes abroad (for scattering, for example), it's wise to carry a copy of the cremation certificate and death certificate, as some countries have specific regulations.
