One of the most common questions we hear is: "How much ash do I actually need for memorial jewellery?" It's a perfectly natural thing to wonder, especially if you're also planning to keep ashes in an urn or share them among family members. The good news is that you need far less than you might think.

A Pinch Is All It Takes
Most ashes jewellery, whether it's a ring, pendant, bracelet, or charm, requires just 0.1 to 0.5 grams of cremation ashes. To put that in perspective, that's roughly a quarter of a teaspoon or less. It's a tiny amount, but it carries enormous meaning.
How Much Ash Does a Cremation Produce?
A standard adult cremation typically produces between 2.5 and 3.5 kilograms of ashes, depending on bone structure rather than body weight. That means even if you fill an urn, share portions with family members, and scatter some in a meaningful place, there will still be plenty for one or more pieces of memorial jewellery.
What If I Want Multiple Pieces?
Many families choose to have several pieces made, perhaps a ring for one person, a pendant for another, and charms for the grandchildren. Because each piece uses such a small amount, you can easily create multiple keepsakes from the same ashes without any concern about running short.
Can I Use Hair Instead?
Yes. If you prefer not to use cremation ashes, or if you want to create a memorial before or without cremation, a small lock of hair works beautifully in many of our designs. A few strands are all that's needed. This is also a popular choice for pet memorial jewellery, using fur from a beloved dog or cat.
How Do I Add the Ashes?
When you order from Devall & Son, we include a filling kit with your jewellery. The kit contains:
- A small funnel to guide the ashes into the chamber
- A pin tool to help position them
- Adhesive to seal the compartment securely
- Clear, step-by-step instructions
You do this at home, in your own time, in private. There's no rush and no pressure. Many people find this part of the process to be a meaningful, quiet moment of connection.
What If I'm Nervous About Handling Ashes?
That's completely understandable. Many of our customers feel the same way at first. If you'd prefer, a family member or friend can help, or you're welcome to visit our showroom where we can guide you through the process in person.
